UFC: Struve vs. Miocic

Brad Tavares Spoils Watson Debut

A stiff and consistent jab, effective counterpunching and a handful of timely takedowns carried “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 11 alum Brad Tavares to a split verdict over former British Association of Mixed Martial Arts champion Tom Watson in an undercard tilt at 185 pounds.

Two of the three cageside judges scored it for Tavares (9-1, 4-1 UFC) by 30-27 and 29-28 counts; a third cast a dissenting 29-28 nod in favor of Watson (15-5, 0-1 UFC).

Tavares did his best work in round two, where he struck for a takedown, transitioned to the Brit’s back and fished for a rear-naked choke. Though unsuccessful in his pursuit of the finish, the Hawaiian now had a clear path to victory. Tavares delivered two more takedowns in the final frame, as he won for the fourth time in five appearances inside the Octagon.

UFC Veteran Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove signs a multi-fight contract with the Aggression Fighting Championship (AFC)

The Aggression Fighting Championship (AFC) is thrilled to announce that 13 time UFC vet and The Ultimate Fighter winner Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove has signed a multifight deal with Canada’s fastest growing promotion. Grove will debut co-headlining a stacked AFC
13 card in Victoria BC on November 3, 2012 that already has a spectacular main event – John Alessio vs Dave Mazany – set to headline. Grove will be fighting on for the first time on Canadian soil and is excited to put on a show for the fans. “All I hear is good things about this AFC promotion. I’m just stoked to get in the AFC cage and fight, I want to show these fans what “Da Spyder” is all about”

“Da Spyder” was a mainstay in the UFC for 5 years after bursting onto the scene after winning Season 3 of the Ultimate Fighter under the coaching of Tito Ortiz. The Hawiian native went 7-6 fighting in the worlds biggest promotion facing the best middleweights on the planet. He will now look to make an impact in Canada’s biggest promotion the AFC.

“We here at the AFC are motivated to take this company to the next level and I believe we need fighters like Kendall Grove to get us there. Team Alpha Male prospect Andre Fili submitted Ricky Wallace with a second-round armbar in a featured featherweight matchup. Wallace met his end 4:08 into round two.

Fili nearly finished it inside round one. He blasted Wallace with a two-punch combination and backed it up with a double-leg takedown. From there, Fili moved towards his opponent’s back, unleashing a hellacious stream of punishment many believed warranted a stoppage.

Referee Marcos Rosales, who drew criticism for his officiating for much of the night, thought otherwise and allowed it to continue.

Wallace never recoverd, and Fili capitalized in the second round. After another takedown, Fili snatched a limb and went belly-down with the armbar. Rosales stepped in despite the absence of a tapout and called a stop to the bout.
